Let it sow!

It may still be cold, and in some cases there may still be snow on the ground but there are signs spring is on its way. Snowdrops, daffodils and winter aconites are starting to appear.

Weekends away and dark evenings have meant there has been no time spent in the garden. Gardening is not known as a night time pursuit! However, these signs of life have got me itching to start growing. But not flowers. I’m thinking more of my stomach and food is the order of the day.
To make full use of the poly-tunnel’s potential I have sown some early carrots (‘Nantes’) and peas (‘Kelvedon Wonder’), which are meant to cope with the cooler weather. I am hoping for an extra early crop! I have also sown some red and white onions with a bit of heat to get them started early as they need a long growing season from seed.

This year I also want to grow more herbs. I am fortunate to have the use of a heated, lit glasshouse at work so have sown some chives, sorrel, chervil, basil, coriander, parsley, sage, oregano and lemon grass to be getting on with. And finally some comfrey with the intention of making it into homemade plant feed later on!
